The Inner Voice of Peace
Mount Abu and Delhi, India, 10-16 October 2005
a dialogue among 43 religious leaders from 15 countries

Responses when they were presented with these questions:

What does it mean to lead a spiritual life today? What is a compassionate heart?

"Spirituality is about how you put your shoes on in the morning!"

"Spirituality can't be divorced from life...it is expressed throughour words and actions. Thus, I practise my spirituality, not as a priest, but as a human being."

"Spirituality in life means being a good, kind person; it means having an inquiring mind and being open to the ideas of others. It means using truth in everything you do."

"Spirituality means purity, service, sacrifice, humility, and attention to our intention."

"Spirituality means to look at our selves, only. This is not selfish. It means going into silence to experience the peace, love and truth that we have inside...it's a way of nurturing ourselves that then ensures the quality of time we give to others."

"A compassionate heart is the practice of loving kindness. Wherever you live - whether you are in an ashram or in a worldly life, that it is a life free from tiredness and labour."

We need new ways to talk about "belief" and "unbelief". We need a realistic and loving liberal religion that even an Atheist can love. ---Rev Brian Covell, www.thirdunitarianchurch.org
